Sleeping Lion Cub WIP - 03 Silent Auction Piece - Finished

Hi All,

I'm calling this one done.  It's done on Ampersand's Pastelbord and it's 100% Colored Pencil.  The nice thing about the pastelbord is you can vanish it when you are finished and does not have to be framed under glass.

This piece is all vanished and ready to go and is 6" X 12".  I've decided to title it "A Lion Sleeps Tonight".  Laurene Puls came up with the title.... Thanks Laurene!

If you should have any questions or comments let me know.

  2. Gemma, I noticed you said you were using the new Soho cp's on this. I just picked up a few to try out. How do you think they work on Pastelbord? You said they are like Derwent's Studio cp's. I found that harder dryer pencils didn't work as well on Pastelbord, but how did these work for you?

Also, I am interested in how you transfered your drawing to the bord. It's looks like you used regular pencil, but that is no doubt wrong.

I really need to chek your blog more often. Sorry I've been so lax lately.

    God Bless!

  3. This is so cute and so very well done Gemma!! I didn't know you had switched to Pastelbord now. Are you still working on suede too? I'd love to see what technique you use on the Pastelbord, since all of us seem to have our own way of blending the colors together on this bord.

Wish I could see this in person, but it appears I will not be able to. We won't be moved to Texas as soon as we were hoping to be. *sigh*

  4. Hi Vicki, Thank you very much!!

Hi Nancy, Oh I am sorry I won't see you at the convention this year. Thanks for your great comments! This is the first time I have completed a piece on the pastlebord, I am still working on the suede board tho. I did use some of the Soho pencils on this piece, and they do seem a bit dryer than I'm used to. I'm still getting used to them, but I do like them. I also used Prismacolor and Derwent on this piece. I like the Derwent Studio pencils on the pastlebord. As far as how I work on the pastlebord.... I use a bristle brush to scrub the color into the tooth, sometimes I use solvent and I also just draw it in. When I transfer the drawing I use Loew Cornell graphite transfer pencil. I also draw a grid on the piece, very lightly with a pencil. My reference drawing also has the grid (drawn in photoshop). This helps me stay focused on the given area I'm working on.

  5. Great work!

Pastelbord, you say? No framing under glass, you say? I'm going to have to try that!

  7. @Carrie... Yes you should try it. It's a sanded surface and when you're done you vanish it. I put about 3 coats of varnish. Then you can frame it without glass.

@Beth... Thanks Bethie! I can't wait to see you, LOL... in person. It's been to long, see you at the convention.

  10. This is so soft and cuddly looking I just love it. The cub hair looks so different from the adult lion hair. You make it all look so easy!

  11. Awww... thanks Linda!!! Their fur really is different, isn't it. I love how it has stripes and spots in it, something you don't see in the adult lion.

    Thanks again!!

  12. Gemma, may I ask what brand of varnish? Is it just regular varnish from the hardware store? Do you use a foam brush or regular? One more question, have you ever tried resin? Thanks so much, this one is georgeous!

  13. Thanks Susie!!!! I bought acrylic vanish at Michaels. It's Liquitex if I remember correctly. Nothing special... just an artist vanish at a regular art store. I used a large soft brush to apply and put about three coats and let it dry about 3 hours between coats.

  14. Hi Gemma, this adorable fellow is going to be very popular at the Silent Auction! I have been away from blogging for quite a while and I am looking forward to looking through your past posts to see what you have been up to.

  15. Hi Teresa!! Thanks so much!! So... aren't you going to Dallas??? If not, I'll miss seeing you there. I've been a bit lax on my blog as well. I have been so busy with my CPSA work for the convention so, I haven't had much time to do to much more. At least things will slow down once the convention is over. Then back to my Ostrich and on to a lion commission I have to do.
    Cheers!!
